Planning a Cycling Day Out in the Lake District

The Lake District is a beautiful area for cycling; idyllic countryside surroundings and virtually traffic-free roads combine to make a nigh-unbeatable cycling experience. As with all things, a good day out cycling, or even a full cycling holiday, requires just a little bit of planning to make it come off well. In this post we’ll offer you some advice on getting this part of your adventure right; from picking the right gear to the right route, Door 2 Door Adventures has you covered for all your Lake District cycling holidays. Our own Chris Packman and several members of our team are qualified British Cycling mountain biking leaders, and are happy to lead cycling outings – on or off the road!

Bike and Rocks

The Kit

Alongside your bike you’ll need a helmet (at minimum). We’d also recommend that you invest in some knee and elbow pads, especially if you plan on getting a bit rough and ready in the hills! The most obvious piece of kit you’re going to need is the bike itself. Your choice of route may influence your choice of bike – a route of flat country roads will lend itself to a road bike, whereas you’ll need something a bit more rugged if you plan on going cross-country. Whether you own your own bike or you’ve chosen to rent when you get there, make sure you get a good model with solid brakes and high-quality gears. A low-end model will only let you down, especially if you plan on beating a few personal bests.

The Route

The route you take is entirely up to you, and what you want out of your ride. Fancy a light jaunt through the countryside? Or is a brutal, mettle-testing climb more your style? The Lake District offers it all in spades.

More relaxed cyclists can enjoy one of England’s most scenic National Parks. From peaceful lakes – many of which offer boat hire – to majestic mountains – Scafell Pike, the largest mountain in England, can be found right here in the Lake District – there’s something for everyone. Don’t miss out on visiting the villages either; these picturesque little havens offer some real treats, if you can find them.

And there you have it! These two factors are the main things you’ll need to consider for your day out, and if you book with us here at Door 2 Door Adventures, we’ll even take care of these considerations for you! Our two-day ride around the Lake District is a particular favourite of ours. We offer a range of holidays here, from Lake District walking holidays to full blown adventure holidays, and we’re proud to say that we’ve walked every route and climbed every mountain ourselves first, before recommending the finest to you.
